Sing, A Guide to Good Singing

Do remember the last time you watched a movie or read a good story and found tears welling up in your eyes? Can you think of a time you heard music so beautiful or haunting that your heart started thumping fast and strong? The arts evoke emotion! Creative expression is powerful. It doesn't just speak to our logical minds but touches a deeper place in our hearts, affecting our emotions and our bodies through our senses. When we make music with our voices, we sync up with nature's mode of operation. We join in the dance of beauty that nature around us has always danced, but that we haven’t always realized. This is what we’re made for! It's my belief that everyone can sing. In my years of performing, teaching private lessons, and directing ensembles I’ve found that singing excellently does come more easily to some than to others, but everyone has the ability to learn and express through song. So, sing because you’re made to sing. Sing because you’ve been created to put beauty and goodness into the world around you. This course has two clear goals. 1.) I want for you to develop your ability to sing with healthy technique and artistic expression. 2.) And I want for you to become more confident using your unique voice. To achieve these goals, I will guide you through this study and practice of body awareness, breath management, tone and resonance production, musical interpretation, and excellence in performance. We will also explore together many related skills, including intentional listening, register practice, and style tips. This course is self-paced and will require self-determination. I believe real learning happens when a student internalizes a love for the information presented, develops a practice routine, and eventually works to integrate their new skills into their daily life. You will get out of this course what you put in, so be ready to give some true effort to become your best! I also believe students learn through encouragement, not through criticism and shame, so these lessons will be purposefully supportive. Each lesson provides an overview of one vocal fundamental, worksheets and activities that explore the information more in-depth and in a more hands-on way, and, lastly, exercises you can use to practice and master each skill.
